College Announces $1.9m in Unspent Funds

Dr. Cynthia Azari, president of Fresno City College, explained that $1.9 million in unspent funds for academic year 2009-10 will now be spent on instructional equipment. The unspent funds were announced at the Academic Senate meeting on April 28. Dr. Azari told The Rampage that the funds came from cost-cutting measures in non-classroom areas.

Less Than One Percent of Student Body Picks ASG Winners

The 2010 Associated Student Government election saw a 46 percent drop in voter turnout compared to last year, in the most recent election of Fresno City College’s student representatives. Only 233 total votes decided this year’s race to become student government officials.

High Speed Rail Could Benefit FCC

On April 15, Fresno City College demonstrated to state officials its ability to train new workers in maintaining a new high-speed rail system planned between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The high-speed rail commission for the state of California will soon be selecting a site for the maintenance facility of the state’s forthcoming high-speed rail system.

College mandates student e-mail

Starting June 1, the State Center Community College District will only contact students through a required, official student e-mail address. According to Harry Zahlis, the Fresno City College network coordinator, the e-mail transition will “guarantee communication with all students on campus.

Commencement Celebrates Class of 2010

Fresno City College students will breathe a sigh of relief on May 21, the day many will graduate with a degree or certificate in a specific discipline. Marisa Villanueva, a 19-year-old soon-to-be graduate who has been attending FCC since the winter of 2008, will receive her AA degree in liberal arts.

District Selects New Chancellor

The State Center Community College District Board of Trustees has named the first non-Caucasian and the second woman, as chancellor in the history of the district. The board voted unanimously on April 24 to appoint Dr. Deborah Blue as the district’s eighth chancellor.

Fresno City College’s First Dance in 30 Years

Fresno City College hosted its first school dance in more than 30 years on April 16, in honor of the school’s centennial celebration. About 145 students, faculty and staff attended. The masquerade-themed ball, organized by Associated Student Government, was held in the FCC cafeteria.

4/29-5/1: City Dances   “City Dances sells well,” box office cashier Lynnette Brown-Morris said, and she was right to say so. The dance production features choreography performed by students and faculty alike. The dancers practice all semester and then drill for 10 days straight.
